- WEEK
OF JUNE 13, 2004
COMMODORES REPORT
The seasons momentum continues to
grow. The days have grown longer and hotter and with it
activity at our club is increasing exponentially. The summer
programs are all in final stages of preparation with the swim
team already practicing, and junior sailing ready to start
full days right after next weekends US sailing mutli-hull
national championships. We have a great staff running
the pool, which is busy already, and our Ideal-18 program is
in full throttle with our boat pro Max back for another year.
I have noticed a number of members out with him already
learning the fundamentals of good sailing. Wednesday
night sailing is back on the agenda and this years first race,
sailed under more official rules now, already resulted in a
protest. That is significant in that people are taking
the racing seriously and paying attention to what is going on
around them on the race course.
Once again I want to apologize for
not being more prolific in the number of issues that have been
churning out from my PC but my time seems to be in short
supply these days. I also seem to be suffering some sort
of writers block. Some have said I may be suffering from
burnout or an early episode of post-commodore stress disorder
[PCSD], a common malady. In any event I tried to
allocate time to put this together before a number of
important upcoming events actually occur. The first of
course is the US National Multihull National Jr. Championships
to be held next week, starting 6/24. We need volunteers
for housing of teams. Currently we have twelve teams signed
up. I will be having a sign up sheet passed around at
various times this weekend and if you can help out with this
that would be great. Similarly, if you can donate some time to
help out during the regatta please don't be shy as we will
need as much help as possible. You can contact myself,
PC's John Dawson and Doug Wefer to lend a hand. The
other event that is quickly approaching is the crab festival,
which is this Saturday, and should rival the clambake as a
mainstay of our Summer entertainment traditions. Right
after the fourth of July to sort of give you a change-up from
Pasta night we have designated 7/7 "Greek
night" with a buffet of Greek dishes. This will be
the perfect cuisine for those hot July days, so enjoy.
Also we will be hosting a Father's Day barbecue this Sunday.
I personally cannot imagine a better thing to do on that day.
Unfortunately for me, due to family obligations, I will be far
from the water with my, dare I say it, .... in-laws.
Anyway that's all for this edition. Grande-out
POSTPONED BLESSING OF THE FLEET
PICTURE PERFECT
Our turn to do run this years
blessing of the fleet was postponed from its original date to
this Sunday, June 13. The weather was beautiful, albeit
windy. Many thanks go out to our industrious fleet
captain Jonathan Waechter for organizing this so well.
Also much thanks to Peter Smorto for use of his new Camano 31,
the "Lizzy B" as the reviewing boat. I also
want to thank all of the flag officiers who participated in
this event with practically every single one present.
NEW ADDITIONS TO THE FLEET
Congratulations to Richard and
Deirdre Klenkel on the delivery of their new 28 foot Bayliner.
The vessel has been christened the "Merry Breeze"
and was picked up May 29. Best of luck for this season,
may you get a lot of pleasure out of it, and we look forward
to seeing you aboard your vessel!
MARYLAND STYLE CRAB FESTIVAL
THIS SATURDAY!
We already have at the time of
this writing [6/16] over one hundred people signed up for this
return engagement of this event. This year in addition
to great steamed crabs and smoked ribs we will have a super
dance band "TCB" which is sure to rock the rafters.
Even if you don't like crabs but want to come down and enjoy
the music we will have tickets available at the door. Be sure
to make your reservations as soon as possible so we can make
sure everyone gets their fill of crabs.
OVER TWO HUNDRED PEOPLE ATTEND
MEMORIAL DAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST
Monday of Memorial day saw the
club set records in the art of flapjack frying. The
clubs staff, board, and flag, as well as junior sailing and
swim team chairs served over two hundred people! smashing all
previous attendance records by a wide margin. It was a
great way to start the Summer!
