- WEEK
OF AUGUST 30, 2004
COMMODORES REPORT
The big news of the week was that
the eagle had landed, right on our club. There had
been numerous reports of a juvenile American bald eagle
spotted in the local environs. Monday [8/30] it was
spotted by several staff members on the clubs roof and beach
and on several trees surrounding the club. Maybe it
heard SCYC had a great view. He then inquired about renting
one of the cottages to stay in until his white crest grew in.
Actually he was scouting out the top of the dock house.
Several members mentioned to me
that my last ebreeze had a somewhat morose or somber tone.
For this I apologize. My point was that I cannot believe
how fast time has gone and wish I could finish more of the
projects I have yet to complete. But just like president
Bill Clintons last months in office I plan on granting several
pardons and passing some new legislation before leaving the
clubs oval office, wherever that is. Best of all: Summer
is still not over and we have some great events still to
come. This Labor Day weekend we will host the commodores
cup. This year it will be sailed in sunfish with a start
for lasers also. The tradition of racing Labor Day was
started many years ago by our neighbors Hempstead Harbor YC,
which had always run it and invited us to participate in
several different classes. We also have the rescheduled
MYCE/LYCE cup on September 12. The annual snapper derby
will also be have its third outing next Saturday the eleventh.
I also have been developing a revised site plan that can be
used by future administrations for continued improvements and
development of our resources. We also received good news
from the Dept. of Environmental Conservation [DEC] who granted
us permits to set up a floating dock system for the junior
sailing program but would also serve members and visitors
wishing to come in with their own dinghies.
Our hospitality chair Laurie
Mastellone has announced that her new project in which she
will edit her own column complete with photographs to be shot
by her staff photographer Adrian Daley. It will be like
a cross between the National Enquirer and reality television
except take place at the club.
I am looking forward to the long
weekend and I am sure I will bump into most of you in the next
two weeks so I have prepared another batch of smoked
bluefish pate [pat. pending] for the bar and asked the chef to
order a case of crackers. See you then.
COMMODORES CUP SUNFISH / LASER
REGATTA ON TAP THIS WEEKEND
This Labor day will see a return
of an old tradition at SCYC: sailboat racing. This race
is open to any member or guest, male or female regardless of
age. It will be a great opportunity to check out what
some of us do all winter: sail sunfish, commonly known as
frostbiting. The big difference will be that it will not
be freezing cold. So come on down and have some fun.
Racing starts at 1:30PM. There are plenty of sunfish
around, so if you want to race and don't have a boat I am sure
we will be able to locate one for you..
RESCHEDULED MYCE/LYCE CUP: Sept.
12
I mistakenly reported the wrong
date for the MYCE/ LYCE cup: it is Sunday Sept. 12.
All interested teams should sign up ASAP. The boats have
all been worked on and are in top racing condition. Get
your teams lined up. I expect to see some more women vie
for the cup this year. Hopefully the wind and weather
cooperate.
THIRD ANNUAL SNAPPER DERBY!
The snapper derby will be held
Saturday Sept. 11, starting at 10AM. Rain date will be
the same time Sunday [9/12]. During the last week, with
the help of my daughter, we seined for silverside minnows as
bait for the derby. Much to my surprise we caught
a baby Snook in the net! Snook are a prized game fish in
Florida and the Caribbean. Imagine the trip this
little fish took to wind up in our harbor. This points
out the continued improvement in the quality of water.
Right now our dock area is loaded with snappers and lots of
the baitfish they like to eat. This years event should
be awesome. Try to sign up your child in advance
to allow us time to prepare enough goody bags for all
participants. By the way the snook was released
unharmed.
ICCT TO BE SAILED IN LOUISIANA
This years international catamaran
challenge trophy will be defended by last years champion, John
Lovell, hot off his successful silver medal Olympic campaign.
A host of other Olympic tornado sailors will descend on
Southern YC, outside New Orleans for the right to challenge
Lovell for this prestigous trophy. If you are interested
in going to see part of this race series contact ICCT chair PC
John Dawson for details.
SWIM TEAM DECISIVELY WINS
LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS
This year the SCYC swim team made
a their dream a reality by winning the league championships by
over fifty points. They got a taste of what it might be
like last year when they came close, placing second by a mere
twelve points. This year they all pulled together and
showed incredible drive and determination not giving up any
seeded places and actually gaining some points in many races
to arrive in the winners circle. A great debt of
gratitude goes out to our incredible head coach, Val, who made
it his goal to makew us winners. Consistent coaching
would appear to have a big payday. All of our coaches
did a spectacular job as well as the parents and committee
chairs who performed a yeoman's job all season. But
mostly the accomplishment belongs to the kids who will
remember the day as long as they live.
JUNIOR SAILING RACE RESULTS
Patty Jakob was kind enough to
give me the results for all the races this Summer. I
have enclosed them in a separate Email because of technical
issues I had trying to incorporate them into MS frontpage, so
be on the lookout for them. Thanks Patty for tabulating
them all.
