- WEEK
OF March 12, 2005
COMMODORE'S REPORT
It has been a while since the last E-Breeze, and there is quite a bit of
activity to bring you up to speed on.
While the weather has not let us forget it is still
officially winter, spring and ultimately summer are not too
far away. With warm, happy thoughts in mind, we have been working
diligently on old favorites, and some new things as well.
Everyone on the Flag and Board is anticipating a
fantastic season ahead, and as always, we appreciate the
support and assistance of everyone who makes this possible.
MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN
The
Membership Committee has launched the 2005 Membership
Campaign. The annual Prospective Members Party will be held at the Club
on March 12, from 5-7 PM, with open bar and hors d’oeuvers.
As in years past, members can consider themselves to be a
guest of the Membership Committee during the hours of the
party. Eat, drink
and be merry…and let the Committee pay for it! But to benefit fully, bring a prospective member along.
If your guest joins the Club as a Senior Member by
April 30, 2005, and lists you as their First Sponsoring
Member, you’ll receive a credit against the May installment
of your 2005 membership dues.
Committee
Chair Richard Cuneo is also seeking anyone interested in
working on the membership effort. The goal of the ongoing
drive is to achieve 30 new members per year, up from the 20+
average of the past 3 years.
Success in this area (with the ultimate goal being 200
Senior Family Members) will benefit each and every member as
it will allow for the costs of running the Club to be spread
over a larger base. Please help! Richard can be contacted at
(516) 759-3602.
FROSTBITERS
GO SAILING IN BETWEEN SNOWFLAKES
Surely our memory of the Winter of 2005
will be periods of extreme cold and some substantial snow, but
the fact is that there have been periods of very warm weather.
Sea Cliff’s Sunfish Fleet 517 has taken advantage of this
and sailed more Sundays than not.
On Sunday, February 13, the fleet
hosted the annual Heart Break Regatta. A healthy fleet of 11
sunfish sailed 6 races in light to medium northwesterly winds.
Mark roundings were often close with multiple boats arriving
together but in the end boat speed paid off. Matt & Paul
Wefer lead the fleet in the junior division, while Doug Wefer,
Jim Koehler and Megan Keating rounded out the top five.
Many thanks go to Past Commodore John
Dawson for his steady hand at the race management and to Mary
Ellen Wefer for purchasing the Valentine’s Day appropriate
chocolate trophies.
Frostbiting continues every Sunday at 1
PM through May 1. The last regatta of the year is the April
Fool’s Regatta on Sunday, April 3. The start on this day is
noon.

SEA
CLIFF YACHT CLUB TO HOST NATIONAL OPTIMIST REGATTA
Sea Cliff Yacht Club has
accepted an invitation from the United States Optimist Dinghy
Association (USODA) to host the 2005 Atlantic Coast
Championships (ACC’s). This prestigious national regatta will
be the weekend of September 23-25, 2005. We will run the event
out of the Town of Oyster Bay Tappan Beach Park in order to
accommodate the expected size of this event. Doug & Mary
Ellen Wefer will be the Regatta Chairpersons.
The ACC’s is a
great opportunity for our Club to bring a National Optimist
regatta to our local waters. It will allow our junior sailors to
easily participate in a national regatta without traveling too
far. Typically the ACC’s attracts 200+ boats from all
over the country and the world. Sailors and their families
typically arrive beginning Friday and sailing will be on
Saturday and Sunday. Optimist manufacturers arrive with tractor
trailers of charter boats, and other equipment vendors will
attend to support the fleet. The USODA runs a special
instructional fleet called the Green Fleet alongside the
Championship regatta.
Doug & Mary
Ellen will be forming a substantial committee to run this event.
They hope you will volunteer to help with this fun weekend. For
more information or to volunteer, contact Doug at doug@wefer.net.
JUNIOR SAILING
Sailing season is fast approaching and the Junior Sailing Committee has
been busy hiring instructors, planning facility improvement, and
setting up the program schedule.
In addition to our outstanding instructors, we are pleased to have
onboard this year the racing coach from the USMMA (US Merchant
Marine Academy), Rick Dominique, for clinics and regatta
coaching. Rick will be speaking at parent orientation about
starting kids sailing and racing. Rick is a wonderful speaker
and we encourage all parents to come and share their experiences
and enthusiasm for sailing.
This year we will host two work parties, an indoor party to create a
sail storage area, and an outdoor party to organize the Opti
area and continue working on the Laser beach. Last year’s work
party was extremely successful due to the tremendous support of
club members. Donating just 3 hours of your time on both
Saturdays will provide much pleasure to the children all season.
The program dates below are tentative and subject to change.
April 4 - Registration Packet Mailed (If you do not receive one or misplace it, extra copies will be in the club office).
April 16 - Indoor work party (building sail storage racks)
April 25 - Registration DUE DATE (Complete registration must be received by this date,
and members must be current with the club, to be eligible for the early registration
discount).
May 21 - Outdoor work party (tent, beach, Opti area)
June 3 - Parent Orientation 8pm Opti parents (presentation by Rick Dominique)
Advance sailors who do not wish to attend the Opti presentation may meet instructors and pick up registration material at 8:45
June 18 - Mandatory Boat Inspection. All boats used in the program must be checked by an instructor prior to the start of the program
June 24 - Swim test (One Hour)
June 27 - First day of sailing / Laser Clinic
Aug 18 - Awards Dinner
Aug 19 - Last day of program
*****JSA racing schedule is posted
