- WEEK
OF MAY 23, 2005
COMMODORES REPORT
Commissioning Day has come and passed and started our
2005 season with a bit of luck. Although the weather was predicted
to be wet and stormy all day, the weather held, and the day progressed into a clear
day. We were even presented with a beautiful sunset to help set the season off to a fantastic
start. Hopefully this Commissioning Day's weather will foreshadow the weather for this
season. So far, it has been unusually cold and wet, but we can then look forward
to many great Summer season's days and nights to enjoy the club.
Along that thought, it has been brought forth by the membership that we
are in need of more time to enjoy the club than was available in the
past. As a result, I would like to announce the club's bar
will now be opened on Saturday nights as well. Please see the new
expanded bar hours listed below at the end of this mailing. Along
with this, the Summer season is starting, and the time is right to ask
for those interested in helping to make the club the place that you
want it to be. Committee member volunteers are needed to augment
the hard work of our staff in order to deliver the activities that the membership
can enjoy. It does not need a major time commitment, as little or
as much as you have to give, and is a great way to meet new people and
get into the atmosphere of the club. Please expect a mailing with a
list of committees, and if you have the time to give, please sign up.
It is with regret that I must inform the
membership that our Dining Room manager, Teri Bogardt, has decided to
resign her position with the club. She has the opportunity
to work in a larger capacity that is also much closer to her home. She has been a great asset to the club
for many years, serving in the office and more recently on the dining
room floor. She will surely be missed by all. I would like to take
this opportunity to thank her for her hard work, and to wish her the best of
luck in the future.
On a lighter note, we have gone international! (well, not really). I have it on report that Vice Commodore Schnipper, while on a business trip in China, has taken an opportunity to visit with
Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and now has a Sea Cliff Yacht Club Burgee displayed at its club in Hong Kong. He is also bringing back a burgee from their Club as a gift to us, so keep an eye out for it in the main bar area in the near future.
The Around Long Island Regatta this year is
becoming a more visible event in the area. The 29th annual
running of the event this year
will be covered and promoted by Q104.3 FM Radio, and will feature live
coverage by long time radio presence, Bob Buchman. Features to
include GPS tracking of major boats, live commentary and on board
camera footage from the competing boats. Of course, the event will
conclude at the club for the awards ceremony and party. This is a
big event which brings a lot to the club. Volunteers are always needed
and appreciated. Please look for volunteer sign up sheets in the
main dining room, or contact ALIR chairperson, Rear Commodore Carl
Larsen.
MEMBERSHIP
The 2005 Membership drive is well under way,
and Committee Chairman, Richard Cuneo is pleased to announce that, as
of this writing, we have 15 new members at the Club this year.
Our soft target of 20 new members per year is well in range, and
our ultimate goal of 30 new members is clearly not out of the question.
Remember, increased membership benefits us all.
Should you know anyone who might be interested in joining the
Club, please contact Richard. Also,
should you have any interest in working on the Membership Committee,
Richard would also love to hear from you. Richard can be reached
at (516) 759-3602.
JUNIOR SAILING
I am pleased to report that issues raised by
members of the Junior Sailing Committee concerning the establishment of
a new junior racing membership category have been resolved to the
satisfaction of all concerned. Here is what happened.
At its February meeting, the Board was presented with a proposal to
allow advanced-level junior sailors who only sail competitively and
train with their own coaches, who in essence have "graduated"
from the Club's traditional junior sailing program, to sail under the
Club burgee rather than having to sail for a competing yacht club.
In line with the Club's mission to promote sailing and in an effort to
stem the exodus of teens from junior sailing, the Board voted to
amend the by-laws to establish a junior racing membership category
open to anyone, including existing family members, who fit certain age
criteria and who were willing to pay a nominal fee. This decision,
in retrospect, was made too quickly, and without enough discussion. Several junior sailing families
objected to what could be viewed as a competing junior program open
to non-members. A written request was made for a special
membership meeting in order to rescind the junior racing
membership by-law. Negotiations between the Board's representative
and members of the Junior Sailing committee resulted in the
creation of a new category within the Junior Sailing Program, open
to club members only, which will allow advanced-level junior sailors to
compete under the Club burgee without having to pay the full
junior-sailing program fee. Before a notice of special meeting
could be prepared or mailed to the membership, the Board met and
voted unanimously to repeal the new junior racing membership
by-law and to authorize the creation of the new Junior Sailing category,
details of which are contained in the letter from the Junior Sailing
committee mailed to the membership earlier this month. I am
pleased that the Board and the committee, working together, came up with
a solution in plenty of time for the start of what I am sure will
be one of the Club's best Junior Sailing seasons ever. Junior sailing orientation is set for June
3, 2005 at 8:00 PM in the Regatta Room. The Junior Sailing season
officially starts Monday, June, 27th.
IDEAL 18 SAILING
The Ideal 18 program is getting into motion
now. Two of our fleet are prepared to go in the water, with the
other two soon to follow. If you are new to the club and want to
get into sailing, the Ideal 18 program is a great way to get on
the water, and hone your sailing skills. Racing will begin soon
on Sunday afternoons, and is always a great way to spend your afternoon
and to meet new members in a friendly but competitive race. If you
are not experienced, don't be afraid to give it a try.
Contact either John Haley, or Jim Arnemann, Ideal 18 Chairmen for sign up.
SWIM TEAM
It is getting time for the swim team to

Swim Team will be holding its orientation meeting on June 8th at 7:30
PM. The meeting is set to take place in the Regatta
room.
