- WEEK
OF July 7, 2005
COMMODORE’S REPORT
The summer season is in full swing at
the Club. The pool is
warm, the fish are jumping and our children’s programs are up
and running smoothly. Thanks
to Club Members Mike Lennon, Chris Burke, Dave Hummel and Governor
Jim Carballal, we have a newly expanded, Astroturf-carpeted,
speed-bump-framed basketball court down by the dock that has seen
constant use since it opened last week. I am pleased to report
that both launches passed U.S. Coast Guard inspection, 15 new
umbrellas and 20 new chairs are in place around the pool and new
lockers have been installed and assigned.
Our Manager, Jim Kowchefski, has been doing a fine job
since he added overall responsibility for the Club to his Dock master
duties, assisted by our Lisa Tarulli, our Controller and Sheila
Woods, our new office administrator.
Thanks to Governor Wayne Smith, free Wi-Fi Internet access
blankets the club property, allowing all members to bring their
laptops to the Club to work and play at the same time.
Now if we can just get improved cell-phone service without
any new towers….
FOURTH OF JULY
What a beautiful Fourth of July
weekend we had at the Club! The weather couldn’t have been
better, the sunsets were spectacular and last but not least, how
about the fabulous Independence Day celebration we had Monday.
What a pleasure it was to see so many members, guests and
their families enjoying the Club. The entire day’s events,
including the barbecue, buffet, D.J. and fun and games would not
have been possible without the tireless work of Entertainment
Committee chair Laurie Mastellone and Master of Ceremonies Ken
Daley. Thanks to Laurie, Ken and everyone else, including our
dedicated employees, who went all out to make last Monday such a
huge success.
SUMMER MEMBERSHIP MEETING
There will be a special meeting of the
membership on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at 8:00 P.M. at the Club for
the Board to provide the membership with a mid-year update on the
Club’s operations, to review possible capital projects and to
discuss the cost of capital projects and possible operational
changes, which are not currently provided for in the approved 2005
Budget, and the impact they may have on the membership.
Please attend if you can.
JUNIOR SAILING
The Junior Sailing Season is off to a
great start, with winds finally calming down over the July 4th
weekend. Our head
instructors, Colin and Caitlin, have posted volume 1 of the 2005
Junior Sailing Newsletter at
www.seacliffyc.org/jrsailing.htm
which will offer additional program details as the season
progresses.
As I write, our Club is hosting the
J.S.A. Western District Regatta. The weather is overcast and cool
with variable northeast winds, and the heavy rain is forecast to
hold off until tonight. It
is great to once again see our pier, beach and harbor filled with
Club 420’s, Lasers and Blue Jays along with dedicated junior
sailors from clubs from all over the Western L. I. Sound
Thanks to Regatta Chair Vice Commodore Dana Schnipper and
Principal Race Officer Matt Doherty for organizing and running
this event.
DISTRICT 8 LASER REGATTA
The Club will be hosting a District 8
Laser Regatta on Saturday, July 23, 2005.
This event will be open to all levels of sailors.
Registration is the day of the event, and the skipper’s
meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m.
IDEAL 18 SAILING
All four of the Club’s Ideal 18
sailboats are on their moorings, ready for both new and
experienced sailors to enjoy.
This is a fantastic benefit of membership at no additional
charge to Club members. Ladies
Night Sailing occurs every Tuesday Night at 6:30 p.m. Contact
either of our Ideal 18 Committee chairs, John Haley or Jim
Arnemann, for additional information.
SWIM TEAM
The Relay Carnival scheduled for June
29th was cancelled because of severe weather, which
means that 2004 championship Sea Cliff Yacht Club Swim Team kicks
off its defense of its title this Saturday morning at Manhasset
Bay Yacht Club. Go Sea Cliff!
I am pleased to report that the
team’s new starting blocks have arrived and, thanks again to
Governor Jim Carballal, have been installed as promised in time
for our first home swim meet next Thursday, July 14th.
Warm-ups begin at 4:00 p.m. and the meet starts at
5:00p.m. (The date was changed from Wednesday to Thursday
to avoid a conflict with Junior Sailing.)
CHILDREN’S SUMMER PROGRAM
The Children's Summer Program 2005 began June 27 and we've been crafting
ever since!! Plans to move into our new home in the cottage
are underway. Renovations and upgrades are in the works, and
the counselors and staff are eager with contributions to make
this quite a fun spot.
Contributions have already been donated to add to our new space, and
hopefully that will continue. We are in need of any items
such as crates, bookshelves, appliances, furniture carpeting, cookware
(Yes, we have a small kitchen for those "baking"
crafts!), etc. The ideas have been swirling furiously
and I truly believe the children will have such a wonderful
experience in this new endeavor! A big thank you to the
Board and staff in the coordination of this for us, and the ongoing
assistance!
We are encouraging members to make their reservations for Friday night dinners.
Our wonderful counselors are taking part as the
babysitters...making that Friday night even more enjoyable
for the children (and for the parents). Just another
"comfort" we can provide!
Our program this year has really stepped up a few notches with more
emphasis on swimming instruction, organized beach activities, and
of course, fun superior crafts. Our wonderful and
"participating" pool staff have added extra fun on our
Recreational Swim time! We are in the works for special
"picture" day, a Day out with Past Commodore Christman
for a "Ride on
Little Tug"... which has always been a highlight for the
group. Nature walks have proved to be successful and the
children are just thrilled with what we find. We've created
crafts from our "finds" on a daily basis, and it really
pulls the day together. The children have been leaving proud
of their accomplishments, excited that they "put their
finds" together, full of a fun day... and yes...tired!
ANNUAL
CLAM BAKE
The
Annual Clam Bake is scheduled for Saturday, July 16th. This
is one of the Club's signature events, one that helps to bring the
Membership together like no other event. This is a true Member run
event, so if you have the time to come down before the party,
please do so and lend a hand. Please do not forget to make
reservations, as this is one of the most popular events we run all
year.
AROUND
LONG ISLAND REGATTA
The
summer is marching on quickly, and July 28, the start of the
Around Long Island Regatta is approaching fast. This is a
large, multi day event for the Club, which brings us much visibility
in the sailing community. Volunteers are needed to help make
the event a true success. Please look for the sign up sheets
on the Piano in the Main Dinning room, and take the time to sign
up for a shift either at the Regatta Desk or on the water at the
finish. No experience is necessary, and it can be a great
way to meet and make new friendships in the Club.
