History
In 1892 Sea Cliff was a small, charming and thriving community,
attracting affluent members of New York and Brooklyn's pleasure seeking society.
The Club was founded in August of that year for the purpose of promoting social
activities, yachting and other aquatic sports.
| On Memorial Day in 1893, the Sea
Cliff Yacht Club burgee was raised for the first time at the Club House, a
sprawling Victorian structure resplendent with porches and a gazebo,
standing high on a cliff overlooking Hempstead Harbor. The Club was
relocated to quarters to the Sea Cliff Pavilion from 1932 to 1944.
It has been at its present location since May, 1945. |

The Club has gained renown in yachting circles, and has attained many
notable honors and distinctions. Members racing one-designs have won
World Championships in the Star and Snipe classes and recent North
American Championships in the Sonar class. Other members sailing
Internationals, S. Boats, Etchell 22s, Ensigns and Blue Jays have
continuously turned in outstanding performances in championship and
regional events.

Cruising yachts flying the Club's burgee, have campaigned successfully on the
Sound in regional competitions, as well as in the Around Long Island Regatta
which the Club has proudly hosted since its inception in 1977. They have
also been involved with long-distance competitions including the Block Island,
Vineyard and Bermuda races.
Sea Cliff Yacht Club has repeatedly won the Arthur P. Davis trophy for
outstanding contribution to yachting on Long Island Sound. The cornerstone
of the Club is sailing, but the focus is on our member families having fun and
expanding their horizons in many different arenas.
