ENTRIES
1.1
Member Yacht Clubs of the Yacht Racing Association of Long
Island Sound are invited by New York Yacht Club (the “Organizing
Authority”) to submit entries to compete in the 2003 New York Yacht
Club InterClub Team Races for the Glencairn Trophy. To be raced in
Ideal 18s, provided by participating clubs, the event promotes
sportsmanship, competition and inter-club team racing.
1.2
Up to eight teams will be invited to compete. Teams will be
selected based on resumes reviewed by the YRA of LIS team racing
committee and The Organizing Authority. The Organizing Authority (New
York Yacht Club), 2002 winner (Larchmont Yacht Club) and regatta host
(Noroton Yacht Club) will receive automatic entries.
Final decisions regarding entries will be determined by the
Organizing Authority and not subject to appeal.
1.3
There will be an entry fee of $950.00 per club to cover
race-related costs and social functions .
1.4
Entry forms (attached) and resumes for intended skippers must
be submitted to: NYYC Interclub Team Race – Glencairn Trophy, c/o
New York Yacht Club Sailing Office, 5 Halidon Avenue, Newport, 02840.

notified by August 22, 2003. Entry fees are due in full no later than
August 29, 2003. Checks must be made out to the New York Yacht Club
and submitted to the NYYC Sailing Office.
2.
MANAGEMENT
The event is under the management of the New York Yacht Club
(the Organizing Authority), its Team Racing subcommittee and its Race
Committee.
3.
RULES
3.1
The races will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing
2001-2004 (RRS), including US Sailing prescriptions and Appendix D:
Team Racing Rules, the Notice of Race
and the rules of the Ideal-18 Class, except as modified by this
Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions when issued.
3.2
All Competitors are solely responsible for the safety of
his/her boats and themselves and the decision whether or not to start
or to continue to race is each team member’s responsibility and not
that of New York Yacht Club or any other individual or entity.
4.
CONDITIONS
4.1
Each team
shall consist of four boats (skipper and one crewperson per boat).
Participants must be members, spouses or dependents of members of the
club that they represent, and the helmsman of each boat must be a
member of the United States Sailing Association.
4.2
Teams from each club will race in two round robins that will
lead to Championship and Consolation series.
a) The
first round-robin will be between each yacht club’s Masters
– skipper to be at least 50 years old and total crew age to equal at
least 100 years.
b) The
second round robin will be between each yacht club’s Varsity
– skipper and crew of any age.
c)
For the Championship
and Consolation series each yacht club will form a team from among any
of the participants in the earlier round robins.
d)
If time,
wind, weather or other contingencies make the completion of a current
or additional scheduled round robin or series impractical, the regatta
may be terminated and the results based on the standings at the
completion of the immediate prior round robin(s) or series; or the
Organizing Authority, may terminate or alter the format in progress,
or make such other arrangements as may be necessary to conclude the
event and determine a winner.
4.3
The format of the Championship Series will be announced by the
Organizing Authority at the Team Captains’ Meeting. It’s is the
intention to include up to four teams in Championship Series and the
remaining teams in the Consolation Series.
4.4
NYYC will provide the Race Committee.
4.5
NYYC will appoint the Chief Judge/Umpire and (s) he shall
appoint jurors/umpires, which may include representatives of the
participating yacht clubs. Participating Clubs are to nominate
jurors/umpires for the event from their respective clubs.
4.6
Participating clubs, except the Organizing Authority and any
others as determined by the Organizing Authority, shall be required to collectively provide up to 32 Ideal-18s
(typically six per entrant) for the duration of the event. Boats will
be divided into groups of four boats each and equalized in performance
potential to the extent possible by NYYC.
NYYC will obtain “borrowed boat” insurance for the event.
5.
SCHEDULE
5.1
THURSDAY, September 4:
A meeting of Team Captains will be held at 1900 at Noroton
Yacht Club (NYC) to announce the pairings for two round-robin series
and the intended format of the Championship Series.
Captains will draw for boats at this time.
5.2
FRIDAY, September 5:
Teams will race in a round-robin among Masters
teams. The time and location of the warning signal for the first
race will be announced at 0800 at NYC. If the round robin among Masters is not completed on Friday, racing may continue on Saturday
morning.
5.3
SATURDAY, September 6:
Teams will race in a round robin among Varsity
teams. The time and location of the warning signal for the first race
will be announced at 0800 at NYC.
If the round robin among Varsity
is not completed on Saturday, racing may continue on Sunday morning if
required to determine the outcome of the round.
5.4
SUNDAY, September 7:
Based on the results of Masters and Varsity
series, teams will race in a Championship
Series. The other
teams will race in the Consolation
round robin.
The time and location of the warning signal for the first race
will be announced at 0900 at NYC.
5.5
Social functions – the following social function are
included in each team’s entry fee.
a)
Libations will be provided following racing each day.
b)
Continental breakfast will be served each day of the event:
Friday through Sunday.
c)
Informal “Team
Race Party” immediately after the day’s racing.
d) The
will be a reception and prize giving ceremony following sailing on
Sunday
6.
SHORE VENUE
The Race Committee,
Ideal-18 fleet, and shore events will be based at Noroton Yacht
Club, Noroton, Ct.
7.
PRIZES
NYYC will award prizes to the winning teams in each round
robin. The winner of the Championship shall be awarded the Glencairn Trophy by the YRA of LIS.
8.
RACING AREA
The racing area will be announced at the morning meeting each
day. Races may be held in
the vicinity of Long Neck Point on Long Island Sound. Spectators are
encouraged.
9.
BORROWED BOATS
9.1
The Ideal-18s are borrowed from their respective fleets. Every effort should be made to avoid damage to hulls, rigging
and sails. Any damage not covered by insurance will be the
responsibility of the skipper. Deductibles may be the responsibility
of the skipper of the boat determined to be at fault, either by
accepting a penalty or by finding of the jury.
9.2
Crews will not be allowed to make any adjustments to standing
rigging or to replace any running rigging or sails unless 1) damaged
and 2) approved by the jury.
10.
SPINNAKERS
Spinnakers shall not be used in any race.
11.
COURSES
Courses will be diagramed in the sailing instructions.
12.
SCORING
12.1
SCORING A RACE: RRS Appendix D, Section 3.1 is changed as follows:
“Each boat completing a race will be scored points equal to her
finish place, plus one-quarter point for first place…”
12.2
SCORING THE SERIES:
a) ELIMINATION
ROUNDS: Masters
and Varsity series will be
scored in accordance with RRS Appendix D, Section 4, which will be
interpreted as “races.”
b) CHAMPIONSHIP:
To be announced at the Captain’s Meeting.
c) CONSOLATION:
The teams not participating in the Championship
may sail in a Consolation round
robin. The Consolation
shall be scored in accordance with RRS Appendix D, Section 4, which
will be interpreted as “races.”
13.
SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
The sailing instructions will be posted to the New York Yacht
Club web site (www.nyyc.org) on or before September 4, 2003
